Debate is everywhere. It is on the internet, on T.V., on the radio and part of our everyday conversations. In fact, some might say that there is too much debate.
Unfortunately, much of what passes as debate is not true debate; it is simply one side presenting an argument or making a case for their cause. This “debate” is often an attempt to demonize the other side. Forget about facts, disregard reason. Simply control the time and run out the clock. This current, twisted version of “debate” stymies knowledge and allows people to avoid listening to an opinion.
We believe there is too much “debate,” and not enough genuine debate. Our goal is to present interesting topics for review and debate—real debate. Our goal is to do so in 500 words or less. Is 500 words enough for a semi intelligent person to raise a subject, present its merits or flaws and plead for acceptance or understanding of that person’s point of view? Well, at DebateSpark, we are hoping it is.
We believe that a true advocate, a true debater, can stick to facts and present a reasonable argument in a concise manner.
We believe people can debate without resorting to vulgarity and name calling.
We believe that reasonable people have the ability to determine which ideas make more sense, or, at a minimum, why a person might advocate a certain position.
What should we debate about? Is it necessary for us to discuss everything? As a general rule, people often talk about things they are interested in. Some interests are based on beliefs, others specific to friends and family members. Current events and social change can drive topics to the forefront.
We are going to discuss topics and present arguments we are interested in. Whether you agree or disagree is up to you. And you can tell us! We want you to tell us!
We will provide the opportunity for proper debate. Look at the points, decide what you disagree or agree with and make your case. Make a case based on valid points. Vulgarity, name calling and demonization is not part of civil debate. That said, arguments may not always be politically correct. Facts are facts whether or not they are P.C.
And, as Joe Friday said, “All we want are the facts, ma’am.” At Debate Spark, we want the facts with a little opinion sprinkled in to drive the advocate's proposition home. We invite your responses—legitimate, on topic, non-vulgar responses.
Are we abridging a user’s “Freedom of Speech” if we prohibit slander, vulgarity or off-topic responses? We are not the government, so the answer is no. The U.S. Constitution prohibits The Government from limiting your speech. Just as you would be kicked out of someone’s house for being insulting, we have the right to remove you from our house if you cross the line. Who's line? Ours.
As we endeavor to Spark Debate, provoke thought and change minds, we hope we will hear from you.
